Quick Check
What is it?
A Quick Check is a set of a few simple questions embedded in the text. Each Quick Check is enclosed in a small box. Each item is numbered (consecutively through the chapter) when referering an item to the instructor for a question or for looking up the correct answer at the Evolve site.
Why?
The Quick Check is all about improving reading comprehension. Reading experts tell us that if a reader stops occasionally to verify that they "get" the main points they've just read, then they can improve their comprehension. If by answering a question, they realize that they don't "get it" then they can go back immediately to reread the section that puzzles them.
The Quick Check items intentionally evaluate knowledge in the lower levels of Bloom's Taxonomy.
We've occasionally had professors suggest that the Quick Checks include higher-level items. Recall that learners begin learning at the lower levels, then move upward. Reading the textbook for the first time should be one of the first things a student does. The goal at this point is to solidify learning at the lower level. If we introduce questions that require a level of understanding that can only come later, we will frustrate the reader rather than help them. The higher-level critical thinking items come later in the process.
